Funeral service was at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 18, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastors Kendall Stelter and Lori Wold officiating; organist, Deb Lewis accompanied the hymns "Just As I Am" and "How Great Thou Art" and special music that included a vocal and trombone solo of "On Eagle's Wings" by Dr. Ralph Gerbig and vocal solo "In the Garden" by Deb Breberg. Casketbearers were Paul Helgeson, Terry Litke, Richard Rimstad, Allan Schacherer, Maurice Schacherer and Charles Struck. Interment was Thursday, March 19, at 1:00 PM, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Leona Mae Mix was born on January 16, 1935, in Baxter Township, rural Boyd, the daughter of Helen Fosse. She lived her entire life in the Dawson and Boyd areas, graduating from Boyd High School in 1952. On December 30, 1952, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Mix at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Dawson by Rev. Otterstad. Five children were born to this union: Richard, Eugene, Murla, Melvin and Michael. For over 30 years, she was a nurses' assistant at the Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson. She enjoyed quilting, putting puzzles together, hardanger, watching the TV show "Law and Order", but mostly spending time with family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. Leona died on Sunday afternoon, March 15, 2009, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 29 days. She is survived by her children: Eugene Mix at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, Murla (Benny) Parrow of Dawson, Melvin Mix and fiance, Darcy Peterson of Montevideo and Michael (Eva) Mix of Dawson; 7 grandchildren: Audrey Mix, Amanda Mix, Brian Parrow, Angela Parrow, Amy Parrow, Misty (Dan) Nelson and Joey Bloom; 8 great-grandchildren: Lillie, Lucas, Kasen, Teddy, Jade, Dawson, Isaiah and Jeremiah; other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother; son, Richard on July 9, 1954; husband, Lawrence on September 1, 1999; daughter-in-law, Dawn Mix and granddaughter, Charity Mix.
