Leonard R. Bensoj

Montevideo

Leonard Benson, of Montevideo died on Monday, October 22, 2001 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 90.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 26, 2001 at 2:00 PM  at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Lois Knutson officiating.  Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home n Montevideo.

Leonard R. Benson was born on December 16, 1910 in Crate Twp. of Chippewa Co, MN to Harry and Effie (Sanderson) Benson.  He grew up in the Gluek & Maynard, MN areas and attended rural schools.  After his family moved to Benson, MM, he worked there for a time before being united in marriage to Doris Hagen on May 31, 1939.  They settled in Montevideo, where he built a home for his family in Smith Addition and lived at 522 Pettijohn for 56 years.  He worked at Swifts for a time before joining Montevideo Implement, where he worked until retiring in 1975.  After retirement he helped out during sugar beet season near Maynard and enjoyed a decade of being a “Winter Texan” He spent his later years at Brookside Manor and the past couple of years has been a resident of Luther Haven Nursing Home.  He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed being an usher, the Sons of Norway and the I.O.O.F. in Montevideo.  He enjoyed camping, cub scouts, growing yellow roses and enjoyed seeing orange tractors out in the fields.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Leppke of Canby, MN; a son, Kenneth Benson of Arcadia, FL; grandchildren - Janet Nutter and her husband John; Martha Muhl and her husband Troy and David Leppke and his wife Angela; great grandsons - Dallas, Kristian and Garret; great granddaughters - Sierra and Kaylee as well as by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris in 1991,  a son, Chris Allen Benson in 1958; a brother, Philip “Bud” Benson, a sister, Nellie Hemrich and a son-in-law, Donald Leppke..
