Lloyd Olson, of Montevideo, died on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the age of 94. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald S. McKee officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5-7:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Lloyd Orton Olson was born on September 4, 1917 in West Bank Township of Swift County, MN to Oscar and Lydia (Snelling) Olson. He was baptized at West Bank Lutheran Church and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church. He attended Appleton schools and graduated from Milan High School. He served in the US Army during World War II, where he studied at Oxford University in England and served as a cryptographer in Europe. He later attended the University of Minnesota. On May 7, 1949 he was united in marriage to Marian Sather in Benson, MN. They lived in Big Bend City until moving to Montevideo in 1954. He owned and operated a cabinet shop for several years and spent fourteen years in the Minnesota National Guard. He worked as a custodian for Montevideo Public Schools and was on the staff of Montevideo American News before retiring. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and had been a Bible School Teacher. He was a long time member of the V.F.W., American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Chippewa County Historical Society. He was a charter member of the Montevideo Ambulance Crew. He enjoyed woodworking, writing, drawing, piano, photography, carpentry and dancing. He authored seven books, enjoyed history and working on his World War II Museum and always had a project going. He is survived by seven children: Dennis Olson and his wife Linda of Moose Lake, MN, Marie Lindblad and her husband David of Maple Grove, MN, Karen Herrboldt of Orono, MN, Rutti Strand of Milan, MN, David Olson of Willmar, MN, Susan DeJong and her husband Ron of Montevideo, MN, and Daniel Olson and his wife Denise of Chanhassen, MN; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rudell (and Leslie) Kittelson of Milan and a sister-in-law, Adeline Olson of Milan, whom he regarded as a sister; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marian in 1999; a son, Douglas; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Schoep; and a brother, Arthur.
