Loren Ashling was born on March 9, 1925, in Dawson to Frank and Cora (Webb) Ashling. He was a grandson of David Webb, who was one of the first settlers who homesteaded in Lac Qui Parle County in 1868. Loren attended country school at District 3 and farmed with his father in rural Dawson. He was united in marriage to Claire Fousek on November 10, 1946, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd. He continued to farm and later started trucking by hauling grain and hay. In 1968 they moved into Dawson.
Loren was active in AA, liked to hunt and fish, play guitar, fix things, garden, and attend flea markets.
Loren passed away in Dawson on Friday, July 17, 1998, at the age of 73 years, 4 months, and 8 days.
He is survived by Claire Ashling of Dawson; children: Gary (Diane) Ashling, Susie (Doug) Myers, Lannie (Brenda) Ashling, and Cindy Ashling, all of Dawson; 10 grandchildren: Tami Montgomery and fiance Brad Henriksen, Melody Ashling, Jennifer Ashling, Jen and Lorry Kispert, Molly Van Horn and fiance Toby Stranlund, Roxanne Van Horn, Shane and Heather Myers, Jesse Myers, Kyle Ashling, and Lisa Ashling; and 1 great grandchild, Matthew Henriksen; one brother, Warden (Adeline) Ashling of Dawson; two sisters: Lorna Tarnowski of Chanhassen and Fern (John) Henry of Nampa, Idaho; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Ashling, and one brother, Grant Ashling.
Funeral services were at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 20, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dawson with Rev. Tim Sumner officiating. "One Day At A Time" which was recorded by Loren was played as special music. The congregational hymns of "Amazing Grace" and "Just As I Am" were accompanied by the organist, Florence Gebur. The casketbearers were Stan Antolick, Webb Ashling, George Henry, Gene Liebl, Maury Ferden, and Dick Heggestad. Interment was in the Dawson Cemetery.
