Loretta Elaine (Lyngen) Garbe was born on January 4, 1944 to Lloyd and Esther (Hendrickson) Lyngen in Montevideo, MN. She was baptized on April 23, 1944 at Watson Lutheran Church and confirmed on May 25, 1958 at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo. She graduated from Montevideo Senior High School in 1962.

Loretta met the love of her life, Marvin Garbe, and they were married on October 6, 1962, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children, Debra, Melissa and Stephen.

Her favorite flower was a red rose and Marvin would bring her a dozen red roses for her birthday, Mother’s Day and their anniversary, she would always say, “I just want one red rose”.

First and foremost, Loretta was a wife, mother, and homemaker, but she also enjoyed working away from home. She shared her skills in many areas over the years with the Old Mill, Pamida, American Family Insurance, VFW, American Legion, K-Mart, 3-M, and even obtained her real estate license, but topped it off with an Administrative Assistant degree from Minnesota West Community and Technical College. Her favorite was working alongside her son at Monte Tire where she was known as “The Tire Lady”.

Some of her past times included bingo and bowling with her mother and daughter for several years, but her favorite was her talent for working with her hands. She sewed numerous clothing pieces from sports jackets for Marvin and Fiesta parade costumes for her children. She created beautiful macrame pieces, decorated cakes for many anniversaries and birthdays, even three tier cakes, did some knitting, but her love was crocheting. She crocheted numerous afghans and doilies for many friends and family. She even crocheted “God Bless Our Home” for many family members and “The Lord’s Prayer” from a photograph, which now hangs at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Her most recent goal was to crochet an afghan for each resident/room at the new Montevideo Veterans Home, but due to her health, she was only able to complete 46 of them. She definitely left a piece of her in many places and with many people.

Loretta passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at CCM Health in Montevideo at the age of 80, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Marvin of 61 years, daughters, Debra (Steven) Hubbard of Alexandria, MN, Melissa (George) Meisch of Altura, MN, her son, Stephen of Montevideo, MN; grandchildren Jordan Hubbard, Hailey (Travis) Rolfsmeier, Brielle Meisch (fiancé Mark Holcombe), and Garrett Meisch; great grandchildren Beckett and Colt Rolfsmeier; brothers-in-law, Vernon Garbe, Harlan (Patty) Garbe and Ron (Rachel) Garbe, nieces and nephew.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Ann Garbe.
