Funeral service was held at the Grace Lutheran Church on Monday, December 14, at 1:30 PM, with Pastors Kendall Stelter and Lindsay Stolen officiating. Organist, Deb Lewis accompanied the congregational hymns were "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Here I Am Lord"and soloist, Jon Wager, singing "Borning Cry" and "Amazing Grace". Honorary casketbearers were Gracelyn Helgeson, Marge Mullins and Carol Phillips and the casketbearers were Wayne Spiess, Jerry Bergeson, Keith Nelson, Ron Helgeson, Rob Schwendemann, and Woody Peet. Burial was in the Dawson Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-7 PM Sunday with a 7 PM prayer service at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson. LouElla Viola (Spiess) Sampson was born on December 16, 1912, in Lac Qui Parle Village, to Julius and Almira (Barrett) Spiess. She attended rural school through the 8th grade west of Watson, MN. On March 21, 1936, she was united in marriage to Herbert O. Sampson in South Dakota. She worked for 18 years as a retail clerk in the drug store and was also a waitress. Her largest accomplishment was being a homemaker. She loved to quilt, especially at Do-Day at Grace Lutheran Church. She remained in her home until March 30, 2009, when she moved to Prairie Meadows Assisted Living and then on October 7, 2009, she entered the Johnson Memorial Home, where she died on Sunday afternoon, December 6, at the age of 96. She is survived by one son: Gaylan Sampson and wife, Janet of Smithville, TX; one daughter, Lynette Matthews and husband, Rolland of Norco, CA; 3 grandchildren: Scott Sampson, Jerry (Aurelia) Sampson and their family-Kaylee Sampson and step-children,Kersten, Lauren and Justin Allen; and Sandy (Jerome) Scallions and their family-Christopher (Shelley) Linder, Dakota and Brooke; Jason (Desiree) Linder and Jasee; Cody Scallions; and Colby (Lindsey) Scallions and Kinley; other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Herbert, on October 14, 1991; brother, Walter Spiess(1985); and sisters, Ethel Baker(2002) and Frances Gruenwald(2004).
