Lowell D. Hanson, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 89. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Tim Wheatley officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 6 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo as well as one hour prior to services at the church. Lowell Donald Hanson was born on August 19, 1920 in Glenwood, MN to Henry and Agnes (Overlie) Hanson. Following the death of his father in 1924, he and his mother moved to her family farm in Langhi Township. They moved to Montevideo in 1937, where he was confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1939. He worked at a grocery store after school and following graduation, and also was secretary-treasurer of the Sunday School. In August of 1942, he entered the US Army and served 38 months, 30 of which was in North Africa and Italy. Following his discharge in October of 1945, he worked for Northern States Power in the accounting department. On November 16, 1946, he was united in marriage to Elna Saterbak at Big Bend Lutheran Church. In 1948 he began working for the U.S. Post Office, spending 23 � years as a city carrier and 5 � years as a rural carrier before retiring in December of 1979. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows and has been financial secretary for over 47 years. He was a life member of VFW Post #380 and was quartermaster for 18 years and was a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties and quartermaster for 14 years. He was a life member of American Legion Post #59 and a member of Voiture #54 of 40/8. He loved to garden, was a great picture taker and in the 1960's he also called square dances. He is survived by his wife, Elna; two daughters: Lorna (and Gary) Boline of Cave Creek, AZ and Penny (and Ken) Josephs of New Hope, MN; seven grandchildren: Scott and Matt Boline, Steph (and Chuck) Hope, Cory (and Tricia) Josephs, Ryan Josephs and Jason (and Sarah) Josephs; three great-grandchildren: McKayla, Brianna and Chase Hope. He was preceded in death by his parents.
