Lyla (Hillman) Schmidt

May 12, 1919 — April 4, 2013

Lyla Schmidt of Marietta died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Madison Lutheran Home in Madison  at the age of 93.

Funeral services was Monday, April 8, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Madison Lutheran Home Chapel with Rev. G. Duane Baun officiating; scripture lessons were Ecclesiastes 3:1-8,  Romans 5:8-6:23 and John 14:1-7; pianist, Lauretta Ruby-Sagawa accompanied the congregation in singing “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” , “Amazing Grace” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”;  Sister Kaye and Sister Annette Fernholz provided special music; and the casketbearers were June Harms, Jason Harms, Karie Sorknes, Gary Sorknes, Donlon Hillman, Roger Christensen.  Interment was at Augusta Cemetery at Marietta.

Visitation was Sunday from 5-7:00 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

Lyla Lillian Schmidt was born May 12, 1919 in Walter Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN the daughter of Carl and Bertha Ann (Lau) Hillman.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Nassau, MN.  She attended school in Marietta and graduated from Madison High School in 1936.  Lyla attended Normal Training in Madison and taught rural school for a number of years.  She was united in marriage with Winfred Schmidt June 4, 1944 at Zachaeus Lutheran Church in Canby. After marriage, they made their home on a farm near Marietta and later moved to a home on Highway 212, where Winfred owned and operated first the State Line Produce and later State Line Station.  They had an egg production business.  Lyla also was a bookkeeper at State Line Oil, sold Amway, and had a furniture re-upholstery business.  She enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling.  She especially enjoyed quilting and was very artistic.

She is survived by her husband, Wimpy of Marietta; three children: Sonja (Larry) Farmer of Marietta, Wayne (Mary) Schmidt of Tucson, AZ, and Romelle (Wayne) Frey of Jackson, MI; five grandchildren: Tracy Farmer, Kristie (Murdock) James, Brendon Frey, Mikell Frey, and Callie Frey; two great-grandchildren: Murphy and Lukus James; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Lee Wayne in infancy; and nine siblings: Roland, Irma, Viola, Irvin, Alvera, Hugo, Louise, Chester, and Louise.
