Lynn E. Van Horn was born on January 12,1922 in Hoffman, Mn. to Nathan and Ellen Van Horn. He grew up and attended school there. Hew enlisted in the CCC in 1939 and spent time working at Big Falls and Walker, Mn. In July of 1940 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and trained at San Diego, Ca. He spent 6 years in the Marine Corps and participated in the battles of Guadacanal, Tarawa, and Okinawa while serving 31/2 years in the South Pacific. Upon returning home he began working for the Milwaukee Railroad. On December 7, 1947 he was united in marriage to LaVerne Vollmer in Holloway,Mn. He worked for the Milwaukee Road for 36 years before retiring in 1983. He enjoyed his retirement by spending summers at Lake Ida near Alexandria, Mn. and winters in Brownsville, Texas. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W., as well as the Second Marine Division Association. He helped form a new V.F.W. Post in Ortley, South Dakota and served as Commander for 2 years. He was on the Ortley City Council for 4 years and on the Montevideo City Council for 4 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo.
Lynn died on Monday August 30, 1993 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife LaVerne of Montevideo; by sons - Brian(Judy) of Watson, Mn. and David (Peggy) of St. John, North Dakota; 4 grandchildren; by a brother - Oscar Van Horn of Shoreview, Mn.; sisters - Helen Olson of Elbow Lake, Mn.; Joyce Curly of Springfield, Oregon; Marlys Upke of Palmdale, Ca.; and Darlene Naber of Newbury Park, Ca.; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by a son - Bruce in 1970, and by brothers - Curtis and Eugene Van Horn.
