Marlys Johnson, of rural Dawson, died January 7, 2015 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, MN at the age of 87.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Crossroads Lutheran Congregation Church in Dawson, MN with Rev. Shelly Larson officiating.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, from 5-7:00 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service at 6:30 PM.
Marlys Eileen Johnson was born January 8, 1927 at Dawson, MN to Oscar and Selma (Quaal) Torstenson. She attended country school through 6th grade and graduated from Milan High School. On April 13, 1946 she was united in marriage to Roy Johnson at Lac qui Parle Lutheran Church. They made their home in Lac qui Parle township, in Minneapolis, MN, in a cottage on Lac qui Parle lake, and on a lakeside ranch. Marlys loved to sing to herself as she worked in her garden. She loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found no greater joy than to make dinners or lunches for them and having overnight guests was a highlight for her. Marlys also enjoyed camping and fishing with her family, traveling to different places such as the Southern States during the winter, and going with her children to swim in nearby ponds when they were younger. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Lakeside Hustler’s sewing club, Nimble Fingers Homemaker’s club, Bible study groups, and numerous card clubs. She was very active in her church and held a position on the church council and WELCA offices. She was the pianist for Sunday School and Christmas programs for several years and also taught many Sunday School classes.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roy; two children: Val (Charlotte) Johnson of Montevideo, MN and Sharlene Jorgenson (Tom Payne) of Starbuck, MN; eight grandchildren: Dr. Val Rae Boe, Angela Weber, Krisi Jo Block, Jeremy Jorgenson, Joshua Johnson, Luke Johnson, Zachary Johnson, and Ben Johnson; nineteen great-great- grandchildren: Dr. Brittany Brindle, Brock Tostenson, Jorgan Scott, Maxwell Scott, Samantha Block, Cole Block, Tate Jorgenson, Avery Jorgenson, Reese Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Caroline Johnson, Kennedy Johnson, Evangeline Johnson, Colton Johnson, Charlotte Johnson, Levi Johnson, Beau Johnson, Thatcher Johnson, and Blaire Johnson; sisters-in-law: Delores Hoaas, Patricia Munsterman, Violet Klungness, and Ruth Ann Sletten; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; parents-in-law, Birdeen and Amanda Johnson; brothers-in-law: Archie, Milton, Birdeen Jr., and Robert Johnson; sisters-in-law: Alice Envoldson and Shirley Johnson.
