Martha Johnson, of Dawson, formerly of Tyler, MN, died just after midnight on Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, at the age of 96. Visitation was held at the Johnson Memorial Chapel for one hour prior to the service. Memorial service was at 1:30 PM, Friday, February 18, at the Johnson Memorial Home Chapel in Dawson with Pastor Adam Manian officiating; the scriptures included Psalm 23, Psalm 46, John 3:16-24 and sermon text of Philippians 1:21-24; organist, Karen Mamer accompanied the singing of "Beautiful Savior", "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art" and "Just As I Am;" and all her grandchildren were urn bearers. Interment will be in the Spring at Memorial Hills Cemetery in rural Lake Benton. Martha Alvina Johnson was born on August 5, 1914, on the Wellberg farm in Lincoln County, MN, to Dietrich Henry and Anna (Kuhlman) Wellberg. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lake Benton, MN. She attended school at District #44 near Lake Benton. She was united in marriage on October 22, 1938, to Carl R. Johnson in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home at the Johnson farm until 1960, when they moved to New Ulm, MN. In 1962, the couple moved to Ruthton, MN, where they operated a produce station until 1968. After this, Martha and Carl were assistant managers for an apartment complex in Marshall. In 1970, they moved to Ihlen, MN, where she worked as a kitchen helper at the Ihlen Glass House and she also did some housekeeping. In 1984, they retired and moved to Tyler. Martha has been a resident of the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson since 2001, where she made many new friendships. She enjoyed dancing, tatting, sewing, gardening, going on walks, playing Bingo, and baking her special burnt sugar cake. Her family was very special to her and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren always made her very happy. Martha will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Marilyn (Don) Schlapkohl of Alexandria, MN, and Judith (Roy) Hinz of Dawson, MN; her son, Michael (Ginger) Johnson of Sturgis, SD; 8 grandchildren: Scott (Barbara) Schlapkohl, Lisa (Bret) Oeltjen, Jodi Anderson, Stacy (Ryan) Jurgenson, Karla (Michael) Erickson, Joel Johnson (fiance, Kelly Lauer), Dustin Johnson (fiance, Tyffany McMichael) and Jordyn Johnson; 13 great-grandchildren: Thomas Schlapkohl, Daniel Schlapkohl, Holly Schlapkohl, Kate Oeltjen, Adam Oeltjen, Brendon Anderson, Rachel (Jake) Swisher, Danielle Anderson, Mallori Jurgenson (special friend, Jeff Norton), Brittany Jurgenson (fiance, Corbin Baker), Taylor Jurgenson, Spencer Erickson, Savannah Erickson; 4 great- great-grandchildren: Alexander Schlapkohl, Caleb Swisher, Atali Swisher and Avari Baker; sister-in-law, Nina Engum; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; grandsons: Troy Hinz and Mark Schlapkohl; sisters: Anna Wellberg, Ida Funk, Bertha Tellinghuisen, Ella Determan and Emma Heldt; and brothers: Edward, William and Otto Wellberg.
