Martha Marie (Carr) Oyen

Martha Oyen, of Montevideo, died on Monday, November 9, 1998 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 81.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, November 12, 1998 at 1:30 PM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Warren Broughton officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and evening, with the family from 7 - 8 PM and with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Martha Marie (Carr) Oyen was born October 5, 1917 at Jamestown, ND the daughter of John W. and Marie (Remmen) Carr.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church and attended public schools in Jamestown and LaMoure, ND and in Duluth and Montevideo, MN where she graduated in 1935.  After attending St. Cloud State College, she taught the primary grades for three years at Marine on St. Croix.  Martha was united in marriage with Sigvald B. Oyen September 7, 1940 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo.  She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of ALCW, Julia Circle, Ladies Choir, the Senior Lites, and also served as a deaconess.  Martha was also active in the community as a Girl and Boy Scout leader, Community Concert Series worker, and member of the Sons of Norway, Chippewa County Historical Society, and the Valdres Samband.  She was devoted to her family and friends, especially enjoying their times together at their cottage at Green Lake.  Martha was proud of the Norwegian and Irish heritage, was interested in traveling, and enjoyed flowers, birds, music, reading, ladies bridge club, and birthday club.

She is survived by her husband, Sigvald; two daughters: Marilyn Carlson and her husband Michael of Eau Claire, WI and Charlotte Souter and her husband Ron of Watertown, SD; one son, Martin Oyen and his wife Ann of St. Paul, MN; seven grandchildren: Amy (Todd) Carlson Sather of Eau Claire, WI, Sarah (Jon) Carlson Buchley of Haverhill, MA, Marcy (Travis) Olson of Madison, WI, Scott (Shris) Souter of Forest, Ontario, Bradley (Sarah) Souter of Hummelstown, PA, Mattew Oyen of St. Paul, MN, and Joel Oyen of St. Paul, MN; one great-granddaughter, Kiana Lee Carlson Sather of Eau Claire, WI; one sister, Mary (Douglas) McDonald of Escondido, CA, one brother, Edwin R. Carr of Long Beach, CA, two sisters-in-law: Monica Oyen of Scottsdale, AZ and Ann Carr of Escondido, CA; several nieces and nephews; former foreign exchange student, Heidi Behne of Bobbau, Germany; and special friends: Beverly and Jim Berven, Margaret Nelson, Janice Nelson, and Elizabeth Gilbertson;

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, William Carr; one brother-in-law, John Chester Oyen; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Carr.
