Martin Berends died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 73.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 1:30 P.M. at Maynard Lutheran Church. Rev. Mary Leigh Boyd Hovland will officiate and interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
Visitation will be held Friday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with the family present from 5-7:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. There will be visitation at the church for one hour before services on Saturday.
Martin Berends was born July 11, 1931 at Clara City, MN the son of Phillip and Elizabeth (Tebben) Berends. He was baptized and confirmed at the Reformed Church in Clara City and attended rural schools in the Maynard and Clara City area. Martin served in the US Navy from 1950-53. He was united in marriage with Marlene Hubble December 10, 1952 at Key West, FL. They made their home on a farm near Maynard. Martin farmed and also worked as an auctioneer. He was a member of NFO Board, Leenthrop Township Board, Maynard School Board, Maynard Lions, Maynard American Legion, Montevideo VFW, and an active member of the Maynard Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; seven children: Rick (Fiancé Pam) Berends of Montevideo, MN, Deb (Al) Paulzine of Alexandria, MN, Brenda (Jeff) Aker of Maynard, MN, Butch (Brenda) Berends of Montevideo, MN, Randy (Tammy) Berends of Montevideo, MN, Sandy (Tom) Jacobs of Kansas City, MO, and Terry (Judi) Berends of East Wenatchee, WA; twenty-one grandchildren: Karie (Rich Hackett) Berends, Heather (Derek) DeSchepper, Wade (Melissa Friese) Berends, Eric and Sara Johansen, Michelle, Eric, and Stacey Paulzine, Chad (Kristi) Aker, Shawn (Melissa) Aker, Corey (Val) Aker, Stephanie (Trevor) White, Tracy (Ryan Kerkhardt) Berends, Troy Berends, Dustin, Travis, and Jaden Berends, Austin, Brady and Chantel Jacobs, and Ty Berends; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Mike (Carol) Berends of Maynard, MN, five sisters: Joanne Ilaug of Montevideo, MN, Ann (Don) Peterson of Willmar, MN, Cora Steffens of Wadena, MN, Elaine (Daryl) Weiss of Echo, MN, Betty (Jerry) Erickson of St. Louis Park, MN; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special niece and nephew, Dan and Carol Jakobs of Montevideo, MN.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Phyllis Berends.
