Melvin Olson, of Montevideo, died on Sunday, June 24, 2001 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 94.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Lois Knutson officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Melvin August Olson was born on March 31, 1907 in Sparta Township of Chippewa Co., MN to Charles W. and Edith (Manthey) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Sparta Township and attended rural schools. On September 21, 1934 he was united in marriage to Caroline Gilsrud at Milbank, SD. He farmed for many years east of Montevideo before retiring, later moving to Brookside Manor and Copper Glen in Montevideo. He was currently a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home. He was a long time member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo and loved to camp, travel, dance and enjoyed wintering in Arizona.
He is survived by a daughter - Carol McDougal and her husband Charles of Richmond, KY; 3 grandchildren - Tyre McDougal and his wife Lisa of Berea, KY; Mark McDougal of Astor, FL; and Pamela McDougal of Richmond KY; 3 great grandchildren - Matthew McDougal of Richmond, KY; Jessica McDougal of Cincinnati, OH and Josh Mason of Berea, KY; by sisters - Myhra Frengen and Hilda Lanes of Montevideo and Evelyn Stroh of Harlingen, TX as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Caroline in 1995; by a daughter - Marlene Olson in 1939 and by a sister - Clara Jurgens.
