Melvin Halvorson, 94, of Montevideo died January 1, 2000 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 6, 2000 at 1:30 P.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Rev. Lois Knutson and Rev. Douglas Olson will officiate and interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday afternoon and evening at Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo and with the family present from 6 - 8:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 6:30 PM and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Melvin Clarence Halvorson was born on December 30, 1905 in Mandt Township of Chippewa County, MN to Jacob and Sophie (Tostenson) Halvorson. He was baptized and confirmed at Mandt Lutheran Church and attended rural schools. Melvin was united in marriage with Hazel Anderson on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1932 at the Sacred Heart parsonage. They farmed in Chippewa County most of their lives. They moved to Montevideo in 1985 and he became a resident of Luther Haven in 1992. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, served on the Creamery, Credit Union and Camp Release Cemetery boards and was a member of the Farmers Union. He was an avid baseball fan, liked to play cards and enjoyed his family.
He is survived by one son, Gary and his wife Donna of Montevideo, MN; one daughter, Audrey Hovland and her husband Darrell of Benson, MN; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Halvorson of New Ulm, MN; five grandchildren: Curtis (Dawn) Halvorson, Cherie (Jim) Niemeyer, Stacy (Seth) Peterson, Jacob Halvorson, and Jason Hovland; three great-grandchildren: Aleisha and Andrew Niemeyer and Elizabeth Halvorson; two sisters-in-law: Sara Halvorson of Minneapolis and Jeannette Anderson of Alexandria, MN; one brother-in-law, Alvin Anderson and his wife Madolin of Granite Falls, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Hazel in 1998; one son, Robert; one granddaughter, Cindy Halvorson; seven brothers: Halvor, Tosten, Peter, Oscar, Joseph, Samuel and James Halvorson; three sisters: Manda Grant and 2 sisters in infancy; as well as by several step brothers and sisters.
