Melvin Hofland

Melvin Hofland, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Chippewa Co - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 101. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with Rev. Marie Eckberg and Rev. Richard Mork officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Melvin Hofland was born on February 18, 1907 in Veblen, SD to Nels and Mathilda (Gullickson) Hofland. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Veblen, attended rural schools and worked on the family farm. On November 3, 1952 he was united in marriage to Palma (Nordaune) Mork at Our Saviours Lutheran Church of Baxter of rural Dawson, MN. Melvin worked as a farm hand in the New Ulm/Madelia area before purchasing a farm in Swenoda Township in 1954. He farmed until moving to Brookside Manor in 1998. He was a long-time member of Jevnaker Lutheran Church. He enjoyed music, especially playing the fiddle. He also enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, card games, working crossword puzzles, was an avid reader enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and loved nature and wildlife. He was a loving father and proud of his family. He is survived by a son, Rodney Hofland of Benson, MN; three daughters: Rachel (and Ron) Garbe of Montevideo; Carla Hofland of Minneapolis, MN and Karen (and Ross) Youmans of Madison, SD; a step-son, Richard (and Barb) Mork of Blaine, MN; 11 Grandchildren: Andy (and Beth) Mork; Aaron (and Shanna) Hofland; Calan Hofland; Tyson Hofland; Ruth Garbe; Alex Gerst; Emily Gerst; Ilianna Gerst; Eric Youmans; Luke (and Kassy) Youmans and Amy (and Paul) Nelson; 5 great grandchildren: Arianna, Mariah and Justice Hofland and Anders and Neenah Mork He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Palma in 1988; four sisters: Mabel Dalberg, Ida Larson, Nora Hofland and Nettie Sanderson; by four brothers: Carl, Orley, Edwin and Elmer Hofland and by all his brother and sisters-in-law.
