Michael Groothuis

Michael James Groothuis of Montevideo passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at CCM Health Hospital in Montevideo at the age of 66.

A Celebration of Life for Michael will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at Rock Haven Church in Montevideo, with Pastor Jason Haug officiating.

Visitation with the family will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, at Rock Haven Church. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Michael James Groothuis was born to Harvey and Marlus (Byrd) Groothuis on October 3, 1958 in Montevideo. He grew up in Maynard along with his siblings, Rick, Steven, and Mary. He graduated in 1976 from Maynard High School and Southwest State University in 1981.

He married Karinda Jordre on June 21, 1986. They resided in Montevideo where he owned and operated Groothuis Accounting. Years later he returned to college to earn an elementary education degree and a master’s degree in special education. Teaching children became his passion.

Michael enjoyed roasting coffee, making soap, recording the weather, and discussing politics and history. He was an avid Vikings and Twins fan. He liked to start his day with a five-mile walk.

Michael served on the Maynard and Montevideo city councils and many boards in the community. He published the Maynard history book, Voices From the Past.

Michael loved the Lord. His faith led him to serve the homeless in Omaha, teach children in Ukraine, and facilitate a Bible study at the jail. He also sang in the church worship team.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karinda; three children: Corbin of Jessup, MD, Ethan of Washington, D.C., and Kalina of Duluth; siblings Rick (Jane) of Maynard, Steven of Maynard, and Mary of Mankato; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, nonperishable food items are preferred. A drop box will be available at both Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home and Rock Haven Church in Montevideo. Memorial contributions are preferred to the Heritage Haven (a transitional housing project located at the former UCC Church in Montevideo).
