Morris Simonson, of Dawson, died Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, at the age of 90. Funeral service was Monday, August 22, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Lac Qui Parle Lutheran Church in rural Dawson with Pastor Charles Beronius officiating. Jeannene Simonson was the pianist; family tributes were by Chad and Mike Simonson; Keith Simonson read the scriptures; the great-grandchildren sang "Jesus Loves Me"; Randy and Jana Fjerkenstad sang "Going Home"; and Randy sang "Amazing Grace" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Honorary casketbearers were the great-grandchildren and grandchildren: Amy, Jana and Tammy and the active were grandchildren: Chad, Mike, Derek, Troy, Shaun and Sara. Interment was in the church cemetery with the closing song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" sung by Randy Fjerkenstad. Visitation was on Monday for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Morris Simonson was born on March 29, 1921, in Cerro Gordo Township to Simon and Oline (Vollan) Simonson, the youngest of 8 children. He was baptized in the Christian faith in 1921, and was confirmed in 1935, with his future wife, Evelyn, at the Lac Qui Parle Lutheran Church, where he was a life-long member. He attended country school through the 8th grade. Morris married Evelyn Kleven on October 26, 1946. They made their home in Cerro Gordo Township, raising 4 children on their farm: Keith, Allen, Marlene and Julie. They lived on their farm until October, 1987, when they moved into Dawson. Morris farmed and milked cows until retirement. As a young man he spent many hours hunting and trapping. He liked to "visit" and play cards with his family and friends. He was active in Farmers Union and served on the town board for 12 years. He was also an active member of LQP Lutheran Church where he served as a Deacon and Trustee. In their later years, Morris and Evelyn traveled extensively throughout the United States with their friends and family. Morris is survived by his four children: Keith (Jeannene) Simonson of Lakeville, Allen (Kathy) Simonson of rural Madison, Marlene (LeRoy) Voehl of Prior Lake and Julie (Randy) Fjerkenstad of rural Boyd; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; other family and friends. Morris died on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the Johnson Memorial Care Center, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn on March 3, 2007; 1 brother, Selfred; and 6 sisters: Alma Johnson, Alvina Windingstad, Pearl Borgen, Mathilda Knutson, Olga Reynolds, and Edna Strei. Morris was a very kind and quiet man, loved by his family and friends.
