Nellie Mortenson, 90, of Montevideo, died June 9, 2000 at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City, MN.
Memorial services will be held Monday, June 12, 2000 at 10:30 A.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo with the Rev. Paul Woolverton officiating.
Nellie Marie (Fader) Mortenson was born February 18, 1910 in Lake County, near Wentworth, SD the daughter of Cleveland and Mary (Stanley) Fader. She graduated from Verdi High School in 1928 as salutatorian, graduated from Lake Benton Normal Training in 1929, taught three years in rural schools of Pipestone and Lincoln counties, and attended Mankato State from 1932 to 1935. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors with a major in science and minors in social studies and mathematics. Nellie married Melvin Mortenson June 26, 1942 in rural Chippewa County, MN. They resided on a farm four miles north of Montevideo. They had four children: Patricia, Mary, Melvin, Jr., and Roma. Melvin died October 17, 1983. Nellie was a farm helper, mother, and had a large garden each year. She enjoyed watching, feeding, and listening to “her” birds. Nellie always enjoyed reading, working crosswords, and playing Scrabble. She was called “Moses” by her children because she always handed out the commandments and became “Meema Moses” to her two grandsons: Drew and Jon Scot. After Melvin’s death, she continued to live on the farm with her son until moving to the Clara City Care Center in March of 1999.
She is survived by four children: Pat Norgren and her husband John of New Hope, MN, Mary Mortenson of Minneapolis, MN, Melvin, Jr. of Montevideo, MN, and Roma Kindschi and her husband Scot of Marshall, MN; two grandchildren: Drew and J.S. Kindschi; one sister, Marjorie Fader of Montevideo, MN; one brother, Roger Fader of Willmar, MN; and one sister-in-law, Helen Fader of St. Cloud, MN.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Melvin; two brothers: Jay and Werter; and one sister-in-law, Rose Fader.
