Norman G. Slagter, of Montevideo, died on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 83.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at 1:30 PM at Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo with Rev. Michael Altena officiating. Interment will be in the Prinsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening and with the family from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Norman Garrit Slagter was born on July 22, 1921 in Prinsburg, MN to Fred G. and Dena (Wibbels) Slagter. He graduated from Clara City High School in 1939. He enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Medical Corps in the South Pacific from 1942-45. On June 23, 1948 he was united in marriage to Ruth Roelofs at the Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Norman earned his B.A. from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI in 1950. He worked as a social worker in Alexandria and Willmar, MN and as a Director of Family Services in Pipestone and Montevideo before retiring in 1983. He was President of the Mn Association of County Welfare Directors. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church and had served on the consistory and was active in all the churches he attended. He was an active member in Gideons and Kiwanis and at one time served as a Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor at the state level. He was instrumental in establishing the Day Activity Center, West Central Industries and Kinder Kare. He enjoyed woodworking, reading and attending the reunions of the Fifth Amphibious Battalion. Norm especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; four daughters: Nancy Schoep and her husband Arvin of Hudson, NY, Kay Westlie of Willmar, MN, Susan Slagter of Reno, NV and Sheila Molde and her husband Steve of St. Cloud, MN; seven grandchildren: Jim (Thea) Schoep, Angela (Mark) Schoep Weirich, Zachary, Luke and Jake Westlie, and Joseph and Adam Molde; four great-grandchildren: Samuel and Megan Schoep and Ella and Lily Weirick; a brother, Garret Slagter of Raymond, MN; two sisters: Leona Bulthuis of Willmar, MN and Dorothy (Don) Buteyn of Eden Prairie, MN; a brother-in-law, Harold VandenEinde; a former son-in-law, Tyrone Westlie. as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James; a sister, Alice VandenEinde; a brother, Henry Slagter; a sister-in-law, Regina Slagter; and a brother-in-law, Henry Bulthuis.
