Omer Joseph Nokleby

Omer Nokleby, of Montevideo, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 98.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, January 2, 2006 at 1:00 PM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening and with the family from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Omer Joseph Nokleby was born on December 11, 1907 in Mandt Township of Chippewa County, MN to Oscar and Emma (Skogrand) Nokleby, and was the oldest of six boys.  He was baptized on January 12, 1908 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Watson and confirmed at Jevnaker Lutheran Church in Mandt Township.  He attended rural schools and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1926. While he attended school, he lived in town with his Skogrand grandparents and after school on Fridays he would sometimes jog the nine miles home to help on the farm.  On August 26, 1934 he was united in marriage to Helga Hanson at the Our Savior's Lutheran Parsonage in Montevideo.  After a five week wedding trip, they returned home to their farm in Camp Release Township.  They lived on the farm for sixty-seven years before moving to Brookside Manor in November of 2000.   He has been a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home since January 1, 2002.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He enjoyed reading, gardening, playing cards and traveling.  They traveled throughout the U.S., took two trips to Norway and drove to Alaska in 1982.  He was active in his church and the Chippewa County Historical Society.

He is survived by a son, Bruce Nokleby and his wife Pat of Plymouth, MN; two grandsons: Mike Nokleby and his wife Terri of Delano, MN and Jim Nokleby and his wife Sue of Coolidge, AZ; seven great-grandchildren: Meghan and Patrick McClellan and Nicholas Nokleby of Delano, MN; and Bailey, Cassidy and Sidney Mindeman and Carter Nokleby, all of Coolidge, AZ; two brothers: Vernal Nokleby and his wife Rosemary and Arnold Nokleby and his wife Ilene, both of Montevideo; a sister-in-law, Dena Nokleby of Montevideo as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helga in 2004; an infant son, Robert; three brothers: Ernest, Minfred and Juleen Nokleby; and by a sister-in-law, Camilla Nokleby.
