Opal Johnson, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the Bethany Home in Alexandria, MN,at the age of 91. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Opal Frances Johnson was born March 23, 1918, in Canby, MN, the daughter of Herman and Hannah (Swenson) Ronning. She grew up in Dawson with her five siblings: Irene, Kenneth, Harris and Glen and graduated from Dawson High School in 1936. Opal married Harold "Fritz" Johnson on June 9, 1940. They were married over 69 years. During those many years they became the parents of four children: Jerome, Robert, Paul and Jean; then grandparents of five: Anne, Elizabeth, Andrew, Douglas and Alexandra. They were faithful partners and loving parents and grandparents. Opal could entertain the grandchildren for the longest time by "Hiding the Thimble" and playing the harmonica. Opal had many skills. She loved to crochet and created many lovely pieces that were shared with family and friends. Crochet lessons were a special event with Grandma. A great memory relates to teaching the four older grandchildren to make lefse. Everyone had their own "flipping" stick. There was a bit of sword play, but in the end we had lefse! There is quite a lefse crew in that generation. She entered the Bethany Home of Alexandria on March 24, 2003, where she died on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 27 days. Opal is survived by her husband, Harold "Fritz" Johnson of Bethel Manor in Alexandria; three children: Robert of Eden Prairie, Paul (Candace) of Alexandria, and Jean Kent of Lakeville; 5 grandchildren: Anne Kent in Germany, Andrew Kent of St. Paul, Alexandra Kent of Lakeville, Elizabeth (Michael) Huebner of Roseville and Douglas Johnson attending Iowa State in Ames, IA; sister: Irene Westgaard of Dawson; sisters-in-law: Heloise Ronning and Verna Ronning of Farmington and Eloise Ronning of Dawson; numerous nieces and nephews, other family and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jerome; siblings: Delores Pitt, Glen Ronning, Kenneth Ronning and Harris; and brothers-in-law: Harold Pitt and Harold Westgaard.
