Opal Zinter

September 15, 1920 — January 23, 2011

Opal Zinter, of Canby and formerly of rural Dawson, died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at the Sanford Canby Medical Center in Canby at the age of 90. Funeral service will be held Friday, January 28, 2011 at 1:30 PM at Providence Valley Lutheran Church. Pastor Lori Wold will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00. Opal Ellen (McKenney) Zinter was born September 15, 1920 at Onida, SD the daughter of Ira and Clara (Baker) McKenney. She moved with her family at an early age to a farm near Madison, MN. She graduated from Madison High School in 1939. Opal worked as a housekeeper in the Twin Cities for a few years before moving to Kansas City to work in a munitions factory during the war. She was united in marriage with Carl Zinter on October 27, 1945, in Madison, MN. They lived for one winter in South Dakota before moving to Goodridge. In 1946, they moved to a farm in rural Canby, where they farmed until retirement around 1980, when they built a new home on a farm 2 miles north. After Carl's death in 2009, she moved into Dawson and later to Canby in the fall of 2010. Opal worked on the farm with her husband. She was also the assessor in Providence Township for 25 years. She actively participated in worship at Providence Valley Lutheran Church as well as LCW, quilting and Bible studies. She enjoyed fellowship with others, doing handwork, playing cards, and singing in the church choir. She is survived by three sons: Dennis (Donna) Zinter of Dawson, Craig Zinter of Chaska and Gene (Bobbie) Zinter of rural Canby; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Carl on January 2, 2009; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Zinter; six brothers: Theron, Harold, and Vance McKenney and triplet brothers in infancy; and a sister, Marion Stanton.
