Orton Sachariason

September 28, 1918 — April 2, 2009

Orton Sachariason, of Granite Falls, died on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the Granite Manor at the age of 90. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 1:30 P.M. at Saron Lutheran Church with Rev. Theresa Kraft officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening, with the family present from 5 - 7:30 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Orton Edward Sachariason was born on September 28, 1918 in Leenthrop Township of Chippewa Co., MN to Edward and Josephine (Bangsund) Sachariason. He was baptized on November 10, 1918 and confirmed on November 20, 1932 at Saron Lutheran Church. He attended rural school and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1936. On September 5, 1942 he was united in marriage to Verona Timm at St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage in Wood Lake, MN. He farmed for two years in Cashel Twp. of Swift Co. and for many years in Leenthrop Township of Chippewa Co. before retiring. He was a life-long member of Saron Lutheran Church and was a Luther League leader, on the church council, was church treasurer and served on call committees. He served on the School Board for District #74, and was a board member on the Chippewa Co-Montevideo Hospital Board, the Luther Haven Board and the Minnesota Beef Feeders Association Board. In high school he participated in football and track, was a fast pitch softball catcher for many years, and enjoyed pitching horseshoes, golfing and bowling. He is survived by his wife Verona; six children: Joel (and LaRae) Sachariason of Montevideo; Carol Arneson of Chicago, IL (and David of Naples, FL); Mary (and Norm) Ritter of Alexandria, MN; Edward (and Janice) Sachariason of Montevideo; Janice (and Mike) Holien of Sacred Heart, MN and Vera (and Hollis) Weber of Hazel Run, MN; nineteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; a sister, Myra Scheltens of Clara City, MN; a sister-in-law, Shirley Sachariason of Montevideo; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Matthew Holien; two brothers, Eldred and De Wayne Sachariason and by two sisters, Sherlet McKinny and Arlies Christianson
