Orville Benson

Orville Benson, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 83. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 1:30 P.M. at the Big Bend Lutheran Church with Rev. Jay Grave officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 PM and with a prayer service at 6:45 P M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Orville Kent Benson was born on March 9, 1924 at Clarkfield, MN to Bennie and Amanda (Mork) Benson. He was baptized at Israel Lutheran Church and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church. He moved with his family to the Big Bend area at the age of 2 and attended rural school there. He served in the U S Army Air Force during WW II. On August 15, 1948 he was united in marriage to Gladys Swingseth in Benson, MN and would have been married for 60 years this August. They farmed for 4 years near DeGraff, MN before moving to the Big Bend area, where he farmed for over 40 years. He retired from active farming in 1986. They moved to Montevideo 4 years ago and he had just recently become a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center. He was a member of Big Bend Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post in Milan, the VFW Post in Montevideo and the DAV. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, going to threshing bees, camping and displaying his wood projects at the county fair. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two children: Sandy (and Steve) Pipp and Tom Benson, both of Crystal, MN; one granddaughter, Sara (and Andy)Brooks of Brooklyn Center, MN; one brother, Bob (and Donna) Benson of Hoodsport, WA; three sisters: JoElla Bryan of Roseburg, OR, Adaline Anderson of Fargo, ND, and Margaret (and Richard) Bjornjeld of Milan, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Earl and Kermit Benson.
