Orville Gulden

August 9, 1925 — March 11, 2010

Orville Gulden, formerly of Montevideo, died on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Sunrise of Edina in Edina, MN at the age of 84. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev.David Daub officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. John Orville Gulden was born on August 9, 1925 in Montevideo, to Hjalmer and Minnie (Storebo) Gulden. Orville was baptized at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo, MN, confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watson, MN and attended Montevideo Public Schools. As a youth, Orville worked the family farm and as a hired farmhand. Following high school, Orville served in the US Army in 1945-46, serving in the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. On December 14, 1947 Orville was united in marriage to Carol Audrey Witte in Ortonville, MN. They were blessed with eight children. Orville farmed and drove truck in the Montevideo area before moving to Minneapolis to drive truck and form a trucking business hauling for Gambles Stores. In 1967 he purchased a franchise with Murphy Motor Freight in Wahpeton, ND. In 1975, he went back to his first love of farming in the Appleton, MN area. He retired in 1992 and moved to New London, MN and spent winters in Tucson, AZ. After his retirement, Orville worked part-time for Menards. He was currently a member of Living Word Lutheran Church in Spicer, MN. Orville was a generous man, always willing to share his time and resources to help others. He loved people and cherished visiting. He was an avid Boy Scout leader, hunter, fisherman and boater. He was blessed with exceptional construction skills. He was always building something - everything from houses to garages to finishing interiors. As a farmer, he loved the land and the animals he raised. He liked to play card games and enjoyed traveling having visited all 50 states. He loved the LORD and was a leader in his Church. He is survived by children: Larry (Char) Gulden of Mahtomedi, MN, Dennis (Nancy) Gulden of Roseville, MN, Charles (Jean) Gulden of Wahpeton, ND, Debra (Kevin) Thompson of Bloomington, MN, Kevin (Debbie) Gulden of Lakeville, MN, Kari (Dave) Pflugshaupt of Rosemount, MN, Diane Cline of Willmar, MN, and Scott (Jennifer) Gulden of St. Cloud, MN; 19 grandchildren: Michelle, Tom, Melissa, Kristen, Sarah, David, Christopher, Heather, Michael, Valerie, Jenny, Tony, Lera, Ryan, Joshua, Justin, Jacob, Evan and Matthew; 14 great-grandchildren: Trevor, Kayla, Emily, William, Caden, Tyler, Ethan, McKenna, Ethen, Audrey, Sean, Lorne, Xena, Sammantha; a brother, Harold (Louise) Gulden of Jacksonville, FL; a number of sisters and brothers in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as by 20 foster children and many friends. Orville is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol in 2005; and by a brother, Helmer Gulden.
