Patricia Lynn Thompson was born July 28th, 1947, in Milbank, SD to John and Theodora (Carlson) Thompson. She attended Strandburg High School where she participated in Speech, Cheerleading, and was a representative at Girls State. She graduated Salutatorian in 1965.
She married Dennis Schmig in 1965. They had four children, Theresa, Denise, Nathan, and Rebecca. They lived in Sioux Falls and Watertown before moving to the Thompson Family Farm in 1972. She moved to Milbank in 1979 where she bought and operated the Gallery Cafe on Main Street.
Pat began showing dairy cattle with Wilford Fredlund and they married on November 7th, 1982. They had one daughter, Eleanor. They milked cows on the Fredlund Family Farm by Canby where Pat was head Fixer and Fencer. Together they continued showing cattle, the most memorable being their All-American Cow, Crissy, at the National Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. In September of 1993, they moved to a farm in Maxwell Township by Dawson and continued to milk cows until 2003.They could always be found in the barn at the fairs helping kids. Over the years they built their very own funny farm with sheep, horses, geese, ducks, chickens, a few good dogs, more cats than they could count, and even a donkey. In 2007 they sold the farm and moved to Dawson where they lived until Willie's death in 2011. They were blessed to have such good neighbors who were lifelong friends.
Pat and Jeff Olson met when she started cleaning for him and quickly became friends. Together they built a home on Lake Tahana by Sisseton, SD and split their time between it and their home in Dawson. She had beautiful flower gardens and grew more vegetables than they could eat. They enjoyed traveling to many states in their RV and were constantly on the go. When at the lake she could be found fishing with Jeff, kayaking, or even out on the 4-wheeler in between her "projects". Jeff and Pat especially enjoyed their time spent with special friends Janie & Marlon Steiner playing marbles and traveling. Her favorite part of the day was watching the sunrise over the lake with a cup of coffee that Jeff made for her. They were married on July 10th, 2021 and enjoyed every moment together.
Pat was a jack of all trades. In addition to owning a restaurant and farming she was a construction flag person with her dad, worked for her friends, Corinne Pesek & Connie Hoffmann at PK Egans, worked at Jennie-O in Montevideo and the Swedish Inn in Dawson for Dawn & Elmer Pehrson. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant at Johnson Memorial where she met her friend Arlyce Benson. Wherever she was, Pat found a way to be active in the community and help those around her. She volunteered for 4-H, several churches, the Christian Women's Organization, and Meals on Wheels. She was a caregiver for both of her parents and her husband Willie.
Pat lived for her children and grandchildren. She was constantly on her way to a grandchild's concert, prom, sporting event, or graduation. She was always answering their questions, teaching them something new, or ready to listen. She never quit learning, a lot of the time from PBS, and remembered all of it. This made her a conversation dynamo. Everyone who met her knew her. She was kind, compassionate, and found the best in everyone she met.
Pat is survived by her husband Jeff Olson; daughter Denise (Troy) Kluess of Shakopee, MN and their children Alexandra (Jeremy) Alf and Cassandra Kluess; son Nathan (Cherri) Schmig of Minneota, MN and their children Ethan Long, Duncan Schmig, Laura Schmig, and Kara Schmig; daughter Becky (Greg) Moorse of Minneota, MN and their children Brittany Moorse, Grant (Denaca) Moorse, Garrett (Fiancee Laura Stiles) Moorse, Gared (Fiancee Kira Gifford) Moorse, Grady (Fiancee Kim Bloch) Moorse, and Brooke Moorse; daughter Ellie (Jason) Fredlund of Tyler, MN and her children Kaden Wintheiser, Kalie Wintheiser, and Kaleb Wintheiser; Jeff's son Jason (Val) Olson of Dawson, MN and their children Collin Olson, Alyssa Olson, and Kelsey Olson; Jeff's daughter Theresa (Brent) Witt of Bethel, MN and their daughter Ava Witt; 2 great granddaughters Brianna Alf and Melah Moorse; Siblings Betty (Tom) Campbell, Richard (Jane) Thompson, Catherine (Dennis) Martenson, Charlie (Christy) Thompson, Jim (Peg) Thompson, Dorothy Thompson, David (Nadine) Thompson, and Allen (Myra) Thompson; Sister-in-laws Cheryl Thompson, LaVonne Fliss, Gail Horton, and Janice Olson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
