Paul Smitherman, formerly of Dawson, MN died Friday, June 17, 2022, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN at the age of 88 from heart complications due to an infection.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 2:00 PM with visitation one hour prior to the service at Crossroads Lutheran Congregation church in Dawson, MN. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Tim Hatt will officiate the service.
Paul Edward Smitherman was born in Bibb County, AL, on December 2, 1933, to Robert and Tressie (Horton) Smitherman. He attended Thompson High School in Siluria, AL graduating in 1954. After high school, he joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Gurke from 1955-1959. Paul was united in marriage to Henrietta (Scherb) on August 25, 1957, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kiester, MN. They made their home in Alabama and Minnesota with their four children. He held many different jobs. Here are a few: Connor Steel Mill in Birmingham, Al., Farmstead Foods Albert Lea, MN, and as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Montevideo, MN. His most fulfilling and a dream come true job was the opportunity to farm with his son in law, Tim Milbeck.
Paul had many hobbies: macramé chairs, hardanger, woodworking, gardening, traveling, fishing, and golfing. He loved his family and spending time with them, especially his grandchildren.
Paul is survived by his wife, Henrietta (Scherb) of almost 65 years and children: Jody (Tom) Harms of Hutchinson, MN, Suzanne (Tim) Milbeck of Dawson, MN, and Diana (Bill) Eldridge of Rosemount, MN; grandchildren: Alison (Ryan) Gamboni, Sarah (Max) Cerney, Cameron Harms, Brittany (Ross) Torgerson, Courtney (Ryan) Sinclair, Kierstynn Milbeck, Alex (Jason) Littlefield, Jeremy Eldridge, Robert Smitherman, and Michael Smitherman; great-grandchildren: Eva & Mya Gamboni, Beckett Torgerson, and Ledger Sinclair; and siblings: Doris Webb of Helena, AL, Homer (Sarah) Smitherman of Alabaster, AL, Mary Ada Edge of Delta, AL, Barbara (Robert) Moore of Auburn, AL, and Ronnie (Martha) Smitherman of Columbiana, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary Smitherman; sister, Delene Roberson; brother, RL Smitherman Jr.; brothers-in-law: Sherman Roberson, James Webb, and Jerry Edge; and sister-in-law, Jean Smitherman
