Pernille (Valland) Kaftan

Pernille Kaftan, of Henderson, NV and formerly of Montevideo, died on Friday, September 1, 2006 at the Del Mar Gardens Hospice in Las Vegas, NV at the age of 96.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday. September 8, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo with Rev. Larry Olson officiating.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening with the family being present from 6 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Pernille (Valland) Kaftan was born on August 29, 1910 in Morris, Manitoba, Canada to Jorgen and Sophie (Dunheim) Valland. Tom and Anna (Jorgen’s sister) Amundson came to Rainy River, Ontario, Canada and picked up Sigurd (Pernille’s brother and Pernille when she was 1 year and 9 months old and brought them to their farm near Watson, MN after Pernille’s mother died giving birth to Sigurd.  They were raised by and assumed the last names of their step-parents.  She attended church and schools in Watson, was confirmed on May 3, 1925 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1929.  Following her graduation she left Montevideo to pursue a career in fashion design and later in life the newspaper business.  In 1948 she was united in marriage to Leonard Kaftan of Chicago, IL.  They raised their 3 sons living in Minnesota, Illinois and Florida. For the past number of years Pernille has been making her home with her son Michael and his family in Henderson, NV and spent many summers in the Montevideo area.  She enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, music and especially time spent with her family.

She is survived by her 3 sons: Tom Kaftan and his wife Joan of Chicago, IL; Mike Kaftan and his wife Cheryl of Las Vegas, NV and Chris Kaftan of Hanley Falls, MN; 5 grandchildren: Hilary, Justin, Bobbie, Shannon and Kirsten Kaftan and 3 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Thomas Amundson in 1929, her step-mother, Anna Amundson in 1940, her husband Leonard in 1997 and her brother Sigurd Amundson in 2003.
