Peter Thomas Oie was born September 8, 1921 in Montevideo, MN to Olaf and Petra (Quall) Oie. He was the 6th of eight children. He graduated from Montevideo High School in 1939 after serving three years in a row as class president and sang in choir and school operettas, a gift and skill he developed and used his entire life. He spent two years at the Montevideo Junior College and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He married Miriam Melom at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in San Francisco on February 21, 1943. They were married 67 years, and celebrated each anniversary with a dozen red roses from Peter.
Peter and Miriam moved to Granite Falls in 1946. Their home has always been on the Minnesota River across from Memorial Park, complete with gardens, orchards, wildlife and many family dogs. Here they raised five children, Thomas, Miriam, Daniel, Timothy, and Jesse Oie (1961-1999).
Peter has spent his last 15 years living in a new home snuggled into the Minnesota River Valley. They survived three major floods, a series of heart attacks that began in 1977 for Peter, and a few strokes. Miriam passed away in March of 2010 and Pete learned to take care of himself - he has always been self-sufficient. Peter’s heart finally gave out on him as he was carried in a helicopter from Granite Falls to Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis.
Peter is survived by his four children: Thomas, New Hope, MN; Miriam (Arnold) Baker, Independence, MO; Daniel (Cheryl), Plymouth, MN; and Timothy (Susan), Annandale, MN; six grandchildren, Sarah Baker Kovacs, Nathaniel Baker, Elizabeth Oie Senne, Benjamin Oie, Alicia Oie LaCroix, and Aaron Oie; six great-grandchildren (two more on the way). He is also survived by his brother Arnold Oie, and their sister Bernice Lofthus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Petra, his wife, Miriam, their son, Jesse, four sisters, and one brother.
