Phyllis Stangeland, of Montevideo, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 75.
Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald McKee officiating. Interment will be in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Dawson.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 - 7 Pm with the family and with a prayer service at 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Phyllis Elaine (Thompson) Stangeland was born on February 27, 1928 in Madison, MN to Leonard Z. and Geneva (Retrum) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church. She graduated from Madison High School in 1946. On June 22, 1947 she was united in marriage to Verne Stangeland at Garfield Lutheran Church. They lived in various residences in Minnesota, Colorado, South Dakota and Indiana before moving to Montevideo in 1974. She was a member of the Auxiliaries of the American Legion and VFW and an active member of various bridge groups. Before retirement she taught bridge and managed her husband’s offices. She enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge and her family was very important to her.
She is survived by three children: Steven Stangeland of Montevideo; Jane Lipscomb and her husband Thomson of Boydton, VA and Jill Komperda and her husband J. Chris of Haleiwa, HI; two grandchildren: Thomson Lipscomb II of Thailand and Geoffrey Lipscomb of Raleigh, NC; ten brothers and sisters: Loren Thompson and his wife Janet of Pinehurst, NC; Elda Soderquist and her husband Ron of Thousand Oaks, CA; A. Henry Thompson and his wife Betty of St. Peter, MN; Joyce Doucette and her husband Stanley of Kailua, HI; L. Dale Thompson and his wife Ramona of Dawson, MN; Eloise Zaniewski and her husband Ron of Stillwater, MN; Deanne Thompson of Redondo Beach, CA; Dwain Thompson and his wife Carolyn of Tamarack, MN; Paul Thompson and his wife Sandy of Montevideo; and Linda Dvorak and her husband Andrew of St. Peter, MN; two aunts: Marcella Shigley and Inyce Retrum, both of Madison, MN; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Verne in 2002 and by a brother in infancy.
