Memorial service was at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 12, at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lindsay Stolen officiating; pianist, Deb Lewis accompanied the hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden"; and special music played during the service included: "Dominique", "Edelweiss", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and "Happy Trails." The scripture lessons: Ecclesiastes 3:1-7, Psalm 23, and Matthew 6:25-34 were read by Toby Kemen and Mackenzie Westby. Honorary Urn Bearers were: Staff of Johnson Memorial, Staff of Home Health Care, and Drivers and riders of the Heartland Bus. Interment was in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was on Friday, June 11, from 5-7 PM, at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson and for 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday. Phyllis Mathilda Westby was born on February 15, 1928, to Henry W. and Cora (Hoyum) Kostad in Providence Township, rural Dawson. She was baptized and confirmed and was presently a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson. She attended school through the eighth grade and graduated from the nursing program at the Dawson Hospital. She was an LPN, and later became a surgical nurse serving in the Canby and Dawson Hospitals until her retirement in 1974. She was married to Albert C. Westby on June 20, 1947, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Dawson. To this union, Kathryn, Michael and Alice were born. Phyllis lived her whole life in Dawson. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening, baking, sewing, animals and listening and watching the Minnesota Twins. Over the years, she developed a strong relationship with the staff at Johnson Memorial and Home Health Care and the drivers and riders of the Heartland Bus. Surrounded by her family, Phyllis died on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 24 days. Phyllis is survived by her 3 children: Kathryn Nelson of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Mike (Beth) Westby of Dawson and Alice Westby of Little Rock, Arkansas; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren: Kelley Jo Nelson and children, Paige and Noah; Stacy (Joe) Whitney and children, Jordan and Cooper; Clint Nelson; Zachary Nelson; Toby (Gary) Kemen and son, Landon Michael; and Mackenzie Westby and special friend, Nate Petersen; "adoptive grandchildren" Mary Helgeson and Cindy Scott; sister, Doris Plate of Dawson; brother, Stanley Kostad of Dawson; in-laws, Iola Kostad of Dawson and Helen (Gerald) Haverberg of Madison; other family and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Albert on November 9, 1983; brother, Kenneth Kostad; and in-laws, Edwin Plate and Leone Kostad.
