Rev. Lloyd Anderson

Rev. Lloyd Anderson, formerly of Milan, died on Friday, January 22, 2010 in Bloomfield, NE at the age of 90. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 11:00 A. M. at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan with Rob Kemppainen officiating. Interment will be at the Kviteseid Lutheran - Milan Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Lloyd W. Anderson, Jr., the oldest son and second child of eight, was born on July 18, 1919 in Milan, MN to Lloyd and Hilda (Tommerson) Anderson. He grew up in Milan and graduated from Milan High School in 1936. He attended Kendall College in Evanston, IL and later the University of Minnesota. Early experience as a bookkeeper in the family business enabled him to gain employment with the Leary Grain Commission in Minneapolis and learn grain buying. He worked for Armour and Co in West Fargo, ND as an accountant and moved to help set up accounting procedures at a plant in Grand Forks, ND. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard and was sworn in on May 26, 1942 in Omaha, NE. Volunteering for the medical corps, he received training as a pharmacist mate at Columbia University College of Pharmacy. His assignments included the Southern Yacht Club and U.S. Marine Hospital in New Orleans and was the lone medic serving over 100 men who protected Horn Island, the barrier island housing the bacteriological warfare experimental station. In 1945 he was assigned to a construction detachment setting up LORAN stations in Pacific islands and later served on the USS Cambria, delivering U S marines to the bombed out city of Nagasaki in Japan. Lloyd continued his education at Tulane University, where he was elected Vice-President of the Junior Class and the student body and was elected President of the College of Commerce and Business Administration student body. He was honored by membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma, Kappa Delta Phi and Who's Who among American College Students in the USA. He was employed by Shell Oil Co in White Castle, Houma, New Iberia, Franklin, New Orleans and Lake Charles, LA as a clerk and as auditor and division office supervisor in Franklin and Lafayette, LA. On March 3, 1963 he entered Central Lutheran Theological Seminary in Fremont, NE, and upon attaining his Master of Divinity degree, he was ordained on June 12, 1966 in Avoca, TX. He was called to serve at Elim Lutheran Church in rural Hooper, NE, serving there for nine years before accepting a call to the Niobrana-Lindy Parish in NE and began serving it on August 1, 1975. Lloyd served the parish for seventeen years before retiring in 1992 and purchased a home in Niobrara. During his retirement he served as chaplain of VFW Post #4834, of which he was a life member and was also honored to be a member of American Legion Post #224. He also continued to be active in his ministry until December of 2009, when he became ill and entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Bloomfield, NE He is survived by three sisters: Marilyn (and John) Handeen of Milan, MN; Phyllis Hauck of Madison, MN and Gwen ( and Tom)Morem of Austin, MN; two brothers: Rodney (and Ruth) Anderson of Owatonna, MN and Donovan (and Norma) Anderson of Snohomish, WA; as well as by 21 nieces and 46 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Ethel Minnick Terry and Winnifred Strand and two brothers-in-law, Ray Strand and Charles Hauck.
