Richard Oakland, of Montevideo, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Luther Haven nursing home in Montevideo, at the age of 88.

A private burial will be held.

Richard Arlen Oakland was born on April 1, 1936, in Montevideo, Minnesota, to Melvin and Avangeline (Ganske) Oakland. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Richard attended Montevideo Senior High for a short time before entering the workforce. Over the years, he held multiple jobs but spent the majority of his working life at a manufacturing facility in Colorado. Upon retirement, he moved back to Montevideo, where he remained for the rest of his life. Dick was an avid gardener, often talking with his family about his weeding skills. He will be remembered for often saying, “I just weed the paper.” In his free time, Richard enjoyed fishing and bow hunting. Dick will be dearly missed by many.

Richard is survived by his son, Steven (MaryAnn) Oakland of Clarkfield; daughters, Cynthia Johnson of Westbrook, and Patty (Scott) Thompson of Fruita, Colorado; siblings, Don Oakland of Montevideo, Mark (Mary) Schultz of Montevideo, and David (Glenda) Oakland of Aurora, Colorado; stepsister, Betty Velde of Granite Falls; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dale Oakland; granddaughter, Melissa Oakland; stepfather, Frank Schultz; son-in-law, David Johnson; stepsister/sister-in-law, June Oakland; stepsisters, Pat Gordon and Janet Schultz; ex-wives, Margaret Smith and Marge Howard; and special friend, LuAnn Strommer.
