Roland Gruenenwald, of Dawson, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, at the age of 94. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home and at the church for one hour prior to the service. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 13, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating. Interment will be in the Grace Cemetery. Roland LeRoy Gruenenwald was born on December 11, 1916, in Garfield Township, rural Madison, to Arthur and Dora (Lokken) Gruenenwald. He was baptized on September 2, 1917, at Garfield Lutheran Church and confirmed on January 26, 1946, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Dawson. After completing 8th grade in country school, he worked at various jobs in the area before entering the Army on February 10, 1941. Before being honorably discharged on July 29, 1945, he received the American Defense medal, 3 overseas service bars, and the European-African-Eastern Service Medal. Roland and Doris Wittnebel were married on December 30, 1945, at the Arena Lutheran Church in rural Madison. Barbara, Stanley and Marc were born to this union. They farmed in Providence Township for 38 years before retiring and moving into Dawson in 1984. Roland was a member of the American Legion and VFW Posts in Dawson and served on the Lac Qui Parle Draft Board for over 25 years. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, playing cards and shaking dice, mowing the grass, and spending time with his children and their families. After his health started to fail, he moved from his home to the Appleton Nursing Home in October of 2010, and the Johnson Memorial Care Center on March 24, 2011, where he died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Doris; children: Barbara Jean (Daniel) Smith of Minnetonka, Stanley (Barbara May) Gruenenwald of Braham and Marc (Kathy) Gruenenwald of Battle Lake; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren: Chris (Todd) Dohrwardt; Andrew Gruenenwald; Daniel (Sarah) Smith and children, Kyle and Chloe; Matt Gruenenwald; Ben (Kristin) Draeger and children, Addison and Justin; Ryan (Alicia) Draeger and children, Morgan and Jake; and Jamie Arvold; other family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; grandson, Scott Rabe; sister, Laurine Holtan; and brothers: Raynold and Wallace.
