Russell Hans Hanson was born on August 23, 1943 in Montevideo to Carl and Mildred (Quammen) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed at Kviteseid Lutheran. Russell attended Milan High School and graduated in 1961. He was united in marriage to Rose Ann Bryan at Bethel Evangelical Church in Appleton on March 28, 1964. They made their first home near Watson and in 1972 returned to the home farm near Milan. He farmed with his brother-in-law, Marv, for many years until he retired in 2009.

Russell was a member of Kviteseid Lutheran Church and served as a trustee. He also served on the church cemetery board, Kragero township board and FSA board. Russell enjoyed hunting and looked forward to going to Northern Minnesota to bait bear and to fish on Kabetogama Lake. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren, teaching and taking them hunting. Russell was also a sports lover. He especially loved watching his grandchildren participate in sporting activities. If he was unable to watch them, he would call to hear a play-by-play immediately following the game. He loved living on the family farm overlooking Lac Qui Parle Lake where he raised various farm animals and wildlife. He enjoyed looking at the gardens around the farm and watching wildlife that often came near the house. He especially liked watching birds.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann; his children Jill (Robert) Blom of Montevideo, Shawn Hanson of Sioux Falls, SD, Kim (Wade) Kittelson of Milan; six grandchildren: Kenzie (Jason) Tenney, Jenna (Matt) Norby, Paul Blom, Braiden Kittelson, Tayler Kittelson, Kaitlyn Kittelson; two great-grandchildren: Josie Norby and Collin Norby; sisters: Marlys (Keith) Kvistero of Milan and Jane (Marv) Link of Milan; brother-in-law, Roy Delgehausen of Appleton; as well as extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law: Carol Delgehausen; brother-in-law: Richard Bryan; and mother and father-in-law: Hazel and Joe Bryan.
