Russell Sutherland Jauss was born at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, on October 20, 1925, the middle child of 3. His nickname is Buddy or Bud, because he was the third generation to be named Russell. He attended grade school in Robbinsdale, MN, high school in Smithfield, VA and Richmond, VA, and graduated from Beauford, NC, in 1942, at the age of 16. He went to NC State College in Raleigh, NC, at 16 years old for 1 years and then served in the Navy from 1943 until 1946. He was on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific during World War II. He then returned to Minnesota and went to the University of Minnesota, but transferred to St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1950. Russ was a principal and teacher in Jeffers, MN, for 2 years, taught at Clarkfield, MN, for 2 years and then taught in Montevideo, MN, until he retired in 1975. He taught Mathematics and held numerous coaching positions at all the schools at which he worked. He started the media center at the Montevideo High School in 1965. Russell was married to Carol Holtey on June 12, 1950, at Appleton, MN. They had 2 sons: David and Mike and 1 daughter, Kathy.
