Ruth V. Olson, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, August 12, 2000 at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson at the age of 78.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Lucan, MN.
Ruth Virginia (Danielson) Olson was born on July 5, 1922 in Lac Qui Parle Co, near Boyd, MN to Evald and Selma (Dahlgren) Danielson. She was baptized and confirmed at Providence Valley Lutheran Church of rural Dawson, MN. She attended elementary school in rural District # 72 in Lac qui Parle Co. and graduated from Boyd High School in 1940. She attended the Canby Teacher’s Training Department, graduating in 1941 and received her B.A. degree from Southwest State University in Marshall, MN in 1981. On October 11, 1942 she was united in marriage to Edgar Olson at the Providence Valley Parsonage by Rev. Emil Benzon. They lived in Boyd from 1947 - 1951, Dawson from 1951 - 1963, Mankato from 1963 - 1966 and to Lucan in 1966. Ruth taught rural school for 13 years in Lac qui Parle Co. and 21 years in the Lucan, Wabasso Public Schools as a First Grade teacher. During her teaching years she served on the Basic Skills, Communication Arts, PER and Math Committees and served on the Teacher’s Assistance Team. In 1987 she was honored as the Teacher of the Year for Wabasso Public Schools. While she lived in Dawson, MN she served as a Cub Scout leader. After moving to the Lucan/Wabasso area, she was a member of Lucan Trinity Lutheran Church. She served as secretary and on various committees for the Lucan WELCA, taught Sunday School for several years and participated in the Vacation Bible School Program. Following her husband’s death in 1993, she moved to Montevideo and transferred her membership to Trinity Lutheran in Montevideo. She enjoyed reading, crafts, walking, quilting, and especially visiting her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by children - Richard (Diane) Olson of Boyd, MN; Gary (Shirley) Olson of Victoria, MN; Candace Holmberg of Mankato, MN; and Daniel Olson of Coleraine, MN; 18 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a brother - Norman (Lois) Danielson of Luverne, MN; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edgar in 1993, two brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.
