Selma died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson at the age of 94. Funeral service was at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 25, at Providence Valley Lutheran Church in rural Dawson with Pastor Cheryl Matthews officiating, her message was based on John 14:1-6; Micah Ness read Proverbs 31:25-31 and Josiah Ness read Proverbs 31:10-15; son, Doug gave comments and a personal eulogy of his Mother; daughter-in-law, Marjorie Ness and daughters, Lydia & Tabitha sang "You Are My Sunshine"; Dean Pearson accompanied on piano by wife Joyce, sang "One Day At A Time" and "In the Garden"; and organist, Arlys Swenson accompanied the hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Borning Cry". His 9 grandsons were honorary casketbearers and Todd Buer, Gerry Haukos, John Haukos, Bob Pehrson, Harvey Swenson and Roger Swenson were active casketbearers. Burial was in the church cemetery. Selma Ardella Haukos was born on March 15, 1915, north of Louisburg, MN, the daughter of Norman and Julia (Ronglien) Haukos. She was baptized and confirmed at Hegre Lutheran Church of rural Madison, and attended rural school in District #49 north of Madison. Selma and Vernon Ness were united in marriage at Holden Lutheran Church in Beardsley, MN, on March 6, 1938. They were blessed with 71 years together and 5 children. She lived most of her life in the Providence area. After Vernon and Selma moved to Dawson in 1976, Selma worked as a cook at the Johnson Memorial Home and also at the Swedish Inn. She loved being a farmer's wife, quilting, making lefse, traveling, and being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Selma died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 8 days. She is survived by children: Vernetta (Thomas) Hiatt of Roswell, NM; Curtis (Cheryl Herrig) Ness of Brookings, SD; Douglas (Marjorie) Ness of Nampa, ID; and Rebecca (Daryl) Schutte of Dawson; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters: Adelaide Hanson of Baldwin, WI and Eileen Adolphson of Ortonville, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, Norman and Julia; husband, Vernon on November 14, 2009; son, Linnae on July 28, 1986; grandson: Derrek Schutte on March 19, 1999; sister, Norma Haukos; and brothers: Norris, Gale, and Orin Haukos.
