Shirley C. Kanten

Montevideo

Shirley Kanten, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the Chippewa Co - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 86.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at 10:30 A. M. At Big Bend Lutheran Church with Rev. Ralph Peterson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening and with the family from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Shirley C. Kanten was born on December 9, 1914 in Chippewa County, MN to Iver and Helga (Saterbak) Kanten.  She was baptized and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church and graduated from Milan High School in 1933.  She attended Madison Normal School and taught in the Chippewa County rural school system until she entered nurse’s training in 1940.  She spent three years as a student in the nursing program at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis before returning to Montevideo and spending her entire nursing career in the Montevideo Hospital System. She was a lifelong member of Big Bend Lutheran Church and was an active and valued member of the Chippewa County Historical Society, volunteering many hours at Chippewa Village.  She was active in the Sons of Norway and the Geneological Society, gave hardanger lessons to many individuals and donated many pieces of her work for charitable causes.  She loved to travel and celebrate her Norwegian heritage.   She was widely known for making rosettes and loved to make gifts for family and friends at Christmas.

Shirley is survived by one brother, Ernest Kanten and his wife Gudron of Ortonville, MN; one half-brother,  Gordon Kanten and his wife Genevieve of Minneapolis, MN; one brother-in-law, Herbert Larson of Seattle, WA; one sister-in-law, Georgia Kanten of Greeley, CO; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, an aunt and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Iver and Helga Kanten; her step-mother, Hilda Kanten; one brother, Vernon Kanten in 1991; one sister, Adeline Larson in 1995; and her fiancé, Forrest Abel in 1949.
