Sidney Jacob Haugen was born on July 1, 1932 in Odessa Township, Big Stone County, the son of Jacob and Edna (Torgerson) Haugen. He was baptized on April 17, 1932 at Eidskog Lutheran Church and confirmed in April of 1946 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1950. Sidney served in the National Guard from 1950 to 1962, he was called to active duty and assigned to Tank Co 136 47th Infantry Division January 1951 to December 1952. He was very proud of his military service and proud of those who continue to serve.
On June 10, 1955 Sidney was united in marriage to Janice Arndt at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. To this union five children; Peggy, Steven, Patty, Pamela and Paula were born. Sidney farmed in rural Correll before making his home in Appleton, Chokio and Dawson. He was united in marriage to Sharon (Fudge) Field November 23, 1979 at First Presbyterian Church, Dawson. This union brought Sharon's four children; Jill, Heidi, Stacey and Chad to the family.
Sidney spent many years driving a tractor/trailer loaded with grain and cattle. He had many wonderful stories of his trips and the number of young men he taught to drive the “big rigs”. He started working at AGP in Dawson in 1978 and continued to work at the bean plant until retiring in 1998. He continued to work various part-time jobs until his health declined. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and his daily drives around town and the area countryside. Sidney took great pride in his lawn and loved to decorate outside for various holidays.
Sidney entered Johnson Memorial Care Center in 2010. Visits by family were a highlight, his face would light up at the sight of his grandchildren and especially the great-grand children. He enjoyed taking part in activities especially Mens Club and visits by the school children. Many of the staff became close friends whom he enjoyed teasing daily.
On the evening of October 30, 2016, with family by his side, Sidney was peacefully called from this life. Sidney was 84 years, 5 months of age.
