Stanley Kostad died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, MN at the age of 91.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson. Rev. Kendall Stelter will officiate and interment will be at Grace Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the services on Monday.
Stanley Gordon Kostad was born December 21, 1925 to Henry William & Cora (Hoium) Kostad. He was baptized and confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church rural Madison. He attended country school in rural Madison. Stan enlisted in the Army October 1944 and received honorable discharge October 1946. On June 20, 1948. he was united in marriage to Leone V. Lee at Trinity Lutheran church in Dawson. To this union two children were born, Deborah & Bradley. In October of 1950, he graduated from the Institutional on-the-farm training at the Madison School. Stan and Leone lived on a farm south of Madison. They farmed, raised pigs, sheep & milk cows. While still living on the farm, Stan worked at Breberg Implement in Dawson. Stan & Leone purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Dawson in 1975. They continued running the hardware store for 13 years. In 1973 they sold their farm site and moved to the Herman Ronning house by the river in Dawson and stayed through 2 floods. After the last flood in 1997 they moved to their house on Hickory Street. Stanley moved to the Johnson Memorial Care Center in June 2013.
He was a lifetime member of the Strand-Saboe VFW post 5247 and the VFW Drill team. After selling the Coast to Coast he continued to repair windows and fix bikes. He enjoyed working with his hands and made many wood project items. Stanley went on many fishing trips – both open water and ice fishing. They enjoyed camping and working on puzzles together and a story goes that he would take a piece of the puzzle and hide so he always put in the last piece. Stan also enjoyed bowling and bowled for many years as a team member of the VFW Drill Team. His greatest accomplishment was when he got a score of 295.
Stanley is survived by his daughter, Deb and her husband Lynell of Boyd; grandchildren: Mike and Jennifer of New Ulm, Laura and Josh of Minneota, and Lynnsey and Ben of Caledonia; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Shelby, Baily, Matthew, Kylie, Joseph, Clare, Cole and Torbjorn; sisters-in-law: Heloise Ronning, Alice Lanoue, Sylvia Lee, and Marge Lee; also survived by Arbie (Bonnie) Lee and Floyd (Dora) Lee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leone in 2006; a son, Bradley in 1974; a brother, Kenneth Kostad; sisters: Phyllis Westby and Doris Plate; brothers-in-law: Albert Westby, Edwin Plate, Thornie Lee, Elton Lee, Glen Ronning, Don Bauler and Jim Lanoue; sisters-in-law: Iola Kostad and Florence Bauler; and nephew, Ronald Plate.
