Terry Lee Iszler was born December 28, 1952 in Ashley, ND to Herbert and Velma (Helfenstein) Iszler. He grew up on the family farm where his father and grandfather were also raised in an area of North Dakota rich in German-Russian culture, a heritage he was very proud of. It was not uncommon for Terry to jokingly refer to himself as a “stubborn old German”. Even though he was an only child, he grew up very close to his parents and extended family, having cousins who were like siblings to him.
He graduated from Ashley High School in 1970 and then attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND where he learned office machine repair. Terry started working at Welker’s Office Supply in Montevideo in 1972. While working at Welker’s, he developed lifelong friendships with many of his coworkers.
It was during his time in Wahpeton that he met his wife, Lois. They met as teenagers at a snowball fight. Terry Lee Iszler and Lois Ann Wanek were united in marriage on June 30, 1973 in Breckenridge, MN. Their marriage was one that grew stronger with each passing day. They went through good times and bad but they always went through them hand-in-hand. Partners in everything they did, they raised their two children, Stacy and Eric, together. He was a very loving, hands-on dad who was involved in every aspect of his children’s lives. He took great joy in his role as Dad. In 2012, he became a grandfather. He adored his grandchildren, Braedon and Rebekah. It was clear to anyone who saw them together that they loved Grandpa dearly.
Terry loved the outdoors and was an intuitive tinkerer. He was an avid fisherman, a sport he introduced to his son-in-law, Travis. The two spent countless hours together fishing on Lake Gilchrist. Archery, hunting, and hiking were among his other outdoor interests. Ever the tinkerer, Terry remodeled the house he shared with his family room by room. There were very few projects that he couldn’t handle. His children were often recruited to assist on his various projects.
Terry was a kind, gentle man who was friendly with everyone he met. He was a loving, devoted, protective family man. Despite his sudden and unexpected passing, his family takes comfort in knowing he is likely in a boat on the lakes of Heaven fishing with his dad.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; two children: Stacy (Travis) Trentham of Aberdeen, SD and Eric Iszler of Montevideo, MN; two grandchildren: Braedon and Rebekah Trentham; his mother, Velma Iszler of Ashley, ND; and several extended family members.
Preceding him in death were his father, Herbert, and his grandparents, William and Fredericka Iszler, August and Emma Helfenstein.
Blessed be his memory.
