November 28, 1897 — September 21, 1995

Thurman Lanes, of Montevideo, died on Thursday September 21, 1995 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 97.  Funeral services were conducted on Monday September 25, 1995 at 1:00 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Douglas Olson officiating.  Burial was in the Black Oak Lake Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation was Sunday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Thurman Alfred Lanes was born on November 28, 1897 in Chippewa County, Minnesota the son of John and Ingeborganna (Erickson) Lanes.  He was baptized and confirmed at Saron Lutheran Church and attended rural schools. He was united in marriage to Hilda Olson on June 12, 1931 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo.  He worked as a foreman for a construction crew for WPA for several years.  In 1939 he began farming in Sparta Township and farmed until retiring in 1962.  Following his retirement from farming he worked for Federal Crop Insurance for several years.  He became a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center in 1991 and Luther Haven Nursing Home in 1993.  He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, he served on several Boards and was a charter member of Black Oak Lake Lutheran Church, served as a member of the School Board for District 7, was a member of the Eagles, and was a charter member of the Farmers Union Oil Co.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda; two daughters: Edith Ann and her husband Robert Jessen of Bemidji, MN and Patsy Ruth and her husband Harold Matsuura of Hilo, HA; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Lanes of Crane Lake, MN; one sister, Evelyn Rodeberg of Minneapolis, MN; a special niece, Bernetta Heitkamp of Montevideo; as well as  numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 7 sisters.
