Velora Mcclain

January 10, 1916 — December 23, 2021

Velora McClain, formerly of Parkers Prairie, died Thursday December 23, 2021 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 105.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 31, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo.  Fr. Paul Timmermann will be the celebrant and interment will be at Saint Ann's Cemetery in Brandon, MN.

Visitation will be for one hour before the funeral on Friday.

Velora Lilah (Mielke) McClain was born January 10, 1916 on a farm near Lucan, MN the daughter of Theodora and Ethel (Knable) Mielke.  She attended school at Milroy Consolidated.  When she graduated she continued to live on the farm and help her father with the farm work.  She married Oliver McClain on May 8, 1934 and to this union was born one daughter, Vivian.  They farmed near Tracy and Milroy and finally bought a farm by Kensington.  They farmed for 50 years before they retired.  They spent winters working at different jobs including Stearns Mfg. in St. Cloud and also a cleaning service in Alexandria.  They also worked at a private estate in Nisswa in the summer for eleven years.  They wintered in Arizona, Arkansas and the Ozarks where they worked at an auction house.  She graduated from auction school in Ames, IA.  Velora was a cook at several night clubs and cafes over the years.  Finally, they sold the farm and moved into Parkers Prairie.  Oliver died in 2010.  She continued to live there until she moved to Montevideo in 2014.

Velora was a fun loving lady, she loved to crochet, put puzzles together and play cards.  She was an excellent cook and was well known for her lemon meringue pie.

She is survived by three grandchildren: Greg Cady of Fairfax, CA, Roxie (Harley) Dreesman of Brandon, SD, and Kelli (Vernon) Pierson of Red Oak, IA; eight great-grandchildren: Melissa, Michele, Brian, Krystal, Allison, Vernon, Jr., and Brianna; four: great-great-grandchildren: Morgan, Isaac, Soleil and Jaxon; and several nieces and nephews including: Alvina Pitt of Montevideo, Shirley (Jim) Dukowitz of Montevideo, Emma Knutson of Granite Falls, Ernie (Kathy) Christianson of Montevideo, Darlene Anderson of Montevideo, Gene (Linda) Christianson of Montevideo and Harold (Gail) Christianson , Jr. of Osakis.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Oliver; her daughter, Vivian Cady; brothers: Elgin Mielke and Wesley Mielke; and sisters Violet Christianson and Juen Starken.
