Vera Russell, of Houston, TX and formerly of the Maynard area, died on Sunday, May 18, 2008 in Houston at the age of 92. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, June 6, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo, MN. Vera Russell was born on May 24, 1915 in Stoneham Township of Chippewa Co., MN to William and Elizabeth (Heideman) Russell. She grew up in the Maynard area and graduated from Maynard High School. Vera had a lifelong love of learning and education. She received her teaching degree from St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1935, returning to receive her Bachelor's of Science Degree in elementary education in 1940. In 1949, Vera received her Masters of Education Degree from the University of Michigan. She taught for over thirty-five years and served as an elementary principal in the Grand Blanc School District in Grand Blanc, MI from 1964 to 1978. In retirement, Vera continued to tutor children at Almeda Elementary School in Houston, TX. While living in Grand Blanc, Vera became an amateur radio operator, K8BPQ. She was active in the Genesee County Amateur Radio Club until she moved to Houston, TX in 1992. Vera enjoyed traveling in both the U.S. and abroad, including South America and two summers spent with a friend in Malawi, East Africa. Vera will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Cleo Russell and Zola Russell Parker and by a brother Ray Russell and a sister Jean Russell in infancy.
