Vergil Hegna, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at his home at the age of 76.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Bill Odermann officiating. Interment will be in the Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the family from 4 - 6 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Vergil Leroy Hegna was born on October 24, 1927 in Hazel Run, MN to Melvin and Theoline (Thompson) Hegna. He was baptized and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1946. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart. On June 25, 1950 he was united in marriage to Arlene Fjerkenstad in Marietta, MN. They lived in Boyd, Clarkfield, Montgomery and Donnelly, MN and Sioux Falls, SD for 12 years before he retired and moved to Montevideo in 1986. He worked for GTA Feeds as a branch manager for 28 years before his retirement. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Clarkfield American Legion Post, VFW Post #380 in Montevideo and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed spending time with his coffee friends, fishing and spending time at his cabin at Lake Minnewaska. In his youth he played football and softball.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; four children: Susan Lucht and her husband Roger of Glencoe, MN, Duane Hegna and his wife Jackie of Stafford, VA, Michael Hegna and his wife Mary of Clarkfield, MN and Debra Graff and her husband Neil of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren; five brothers: Marvin (Mavis) Hegna of Clarkfield, MN, Wayne (Carolyn) Hegna of Sun City, AZ, David (Delores) Hegna of Hesperia, CA, Larry Hegna of Brainerd, MN and Mal (Pat) Hegna of Hesperia, CA; six sisters: Marilyn Johnson of Berlin, WI, Maysel (Earl) Tweet of Conrad, MT, Janice (Alton) Lindquist of Madison, MN, Pat (Wayne) Myhre of Montevideo, MN, Kathleen (Bruce) Marsh of Glencoe, MN and Kathryn (Stan) Haats of Maynard, MN; one sister-in-law, Dorrie Hegna of Granite Falls, MN; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jon Hegna; and three brothers: Douglas, Wesley and Dennis Hegna.
