Verna Mae (Walraven) Nash

January 21, 1911 — February 11, 2004

Montevideo

Verna Nash, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at the age of 93.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 1:30 PM at United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Paul Woolverton officiating.  Interment will be in the Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening and with the family from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Verna Mae (Walraven) Nash was born on January 21, 1911 in Huron, SD to Charlie and Maggie  (Stambaugh) Walraven.  She attended rural schools and graduated from Huron High School in 1928.  On February 18, 1931 she was united in marriage to Lester Nash at Broadland, SD.  They farmed near Bonilla, SD, moved to a farm near Dawson, MN in 1936 and later moved to a farm north of Montevideo. Following their retirement from farming, they moved into Montevideo in 1970.  She had been an active member of Rosewood United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and a lay leader. Verna was active in the UMC, where she had served as President, treasurer and served on various committees and had served as District Treasurer, nominating committee member and as Emma Norton Representative.  She was currently a member of United Methodist Church in Montevideo. She was a charter member of the Fiesta Floral Garden Club and often furnished flowers from her garden for the church altar and special occasions.  She helped organize the Extensions Club in Mandt Township and was superintendent of “Flowers” at the Chippewa County Fair.  Verna was named the district star gardener in 1980 and awarded the state horticultural society award of merit in 1986.

Verna is survived by two sons: William Nash and his wife Dian of Klamath Falls, OR and Douglas Nash and his wife Sandra of Chesterfield, MO; one daughter-in-law, Louvica Nash of Coon Rapids, MN; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Pageler of Huron, SD; one sister-in-law, Francis Walraven of Watertown, SD; as well as by a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester in 1985; her eldest son, Dwight in 1994; an infant grandson, Eric; three brothers: Ollie, John and Infant Benjamin Walraven; and three sisters: Bessie Hartley, Evelyn Deyo, and Helen Grimm.
