Verna Olson, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home at the age of 94. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. at Big Bend Lutheran Church with Rev. Eugene Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 P.M. and with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Verna Helen Evangeline (Eliason) Olson was born on June 25, 1917 in Big Bend Township of Chippewa County, MN to Bernt and Petra (Torgelson) Eliason. She was baptized at Big Bend Lutheran Church and later confirmed there on August 30, 1931. She attended rural schools and Appleton Public schools. On December 9, 1935 she was united in marriage to Melvin M. Olson in Benson, MN. They farmed in the Big Bend area for 34 years before moving into Montevideo in 1977. She worked at the Hunt Hotel, Mall Cafe, Prairie Five, CAC Wear and Share for 15 years before retiring on September 30, 2004 at the age of 87. She has been a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home since December of 2006. She was a life-long member of Big Bend Lutheran Church and loved being a farm wife. She enjoyed nature, black dirt, green plants, looking at the crops in the spring, and especially her multi-generations of family. She is survived by children: LeRoy (and Jocile) Olson and Marge Wessling, both of Montevideo; seven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; twenty great, great grandchildren; a brother, Ray Eliason of Roseau, MN; sisters: Beatrice Steinke of Appleton, MN and Erma Catlin of Nevada; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin in 1990; a granddaughter and her husband, Michelle (Wessling) and Tom Lightfoot in 1981; sisters: Eudell Anderson and Marilyn Thompson; and brothers: Lowell, Gordon and Elmer Eliason.
