Verna Lavonne Hofland Siverhus was born to George and Bertha (Teigen) Hofland on December 28, 1924, on the family homestead, in Adams County, North Dakota. Along with her siblings, she attended grade school at rural Red Star School, and later at Reeder School through the 8th grade. Verna was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Reeder, where she also attended Sunday School and joined in other church activities.
In 1945, while visiting her brother (Silas) and sister-in-law (Joean) in Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota, she met her future husband Oral Siverhus of rural Maynard, Minnesota. Both Oral and Silas had recently been discharged from the US Army after serving overseas during World War II – Oral in the South Pacific and Silas in Europe. Joean, a first cousin of Oral, introduced to him Verna. They were joined in marriage on September 18, 1946, and lived in the Maynard and Montevideo area during their marriage. Four children were born to this union: Judy Marie (1948), Michael Oral (1949), Mark George (1955), and Jeffrey Lee (1960). Verna was a member of Saron Lutheran Church of rural Maynard where she was a faithful member, taught Sunday School, and participated in Ladies Aid.
Having company come over for a visit was always special and Verna made sure that there were plenty of treats on hand for her extended family and friends. She loved preparing lefse, donuts, rhubarb dessert and so many other delicacies.
Verna is survived by two sons: Mike and wife Vallapa (Pat) of Woodbury, Minnesota, and Jeff and wife Beth of Warroad, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Michelle, Tim, Sara and Emily; five great-grandchildren: Malcolm, Mali, Alida, Jasmine and Myles.
Verna is preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Judy in 1948, son Mark in 1971, two sisters, and five brothers.
Thanks be to God for her life. Blessed be her memory.
